SCCPSS leaders hold EXCEL conference to focus on teacher development ahead of Aug. 4 school year start

Ken Slatz, a staff member for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS), said district and school leaders gathered at the EXCEL Summer Leadership Conference this week to focus on professional development and preparations for the district’s Aug. 4 school-year start.
The gathering emphasized supporting teachers’ development and building leadership skills, a priority SCCPSS officials said because they view investment in staff as an investment in students. "Investing in our employees is ultimately an investment in our students," Slatz said. "Which is the top priority at SCCPSS."
Conference sessions were framed around collaborative leadership and sharing practical strategies. Slatz said the conference is “a testament” to lifelong learning for educators and that bringing leaders together allows them to "share problems of practice" and surface answers to pressing challenges. He added that leaders should view themselves as "the head learner" and seek the most recent research on student support.
Organizers described the event as time for district leadership and school principals to collaborate in preparation for the coming school year. Slatz noted that when employees see the district investing in their professional growth and well-being, they are "more apt to be productive" and to transfer that energy to students.
The conference, described by Slatz as the EXCEL Summer Leadership Conference, took place in the weeks before SCCPSS schools reopen Aug. 4. No formal motions, votes, or budget actions were reported in the remarks; the session focused on professional development and operational preparation rather than on policy decisions.
