Kitsap Transit operators honored; Valerie Quill wins national 35-foot bus rodeo title

KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — At its June 3 meeting Kitsap Transit recognized several operators for safety and service and announced that operator Valerie (Val) Quill won the national title in the 35-foot bus division at the National Community Transportation Rodeo.
Staff presented letters and cash awards from the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool to two operators (Ed Jones and Matt Timgud) for years of accident‑free driving. Kitsap Transit also named Rebecca Hager as routed operations operator of the month for April 2025 and noted her safety awards, "17 Way 2 Go Awards," one Distinguished Driver award and five consecutive Safe Driving awards through 2024. Access operator Evan Mathieson and worker-driver Tamara Berg were named operators of the month for their respective programs.
Executive staff described Val Quill’s national rodeo performance, saying she won first place in the 35-foot division and will be invited to participate in training assignments on her return. Staff said Quill, a mentor driver with 41 years of experience, practiced extensively on her own time and worked with other agencies to prepare for competition. The board discussed public recognition, a potential patch and social-media promotion and agreed to invite Quill to a future meeting to celebrate her achievement.
No board action was required; the presentation was ceremonial recognition of staff and operators.
