SPRINGFIELD — The Historic Preservation Commission approved a petitioner’s request to relocate an electrical meter from inside to outside a building and to install a heat pump at 64 Washington Road, finding proposed equipment would be minimally visible from the public right of way.
The petitioner explained she needs to upgrade interior electrical service from 100 to 200 amps to add a third-floor heat pump. Eversource requires the meter to be moved outside for the upgrade, she said, and electricians identified a location on the north side of the building behind foliage and near a window that staff said would be minimally visible from the street.
The petitioner said the proposed heat pump and exterior disconnect would be located at the rear of the house and not visible from the public way. Neighbor Harry Seymour, who spoke in support, said the proposed locations would be difficult to see from the street. The petitioner pledged to paint conduits white and to minimize visibility.
After questions about conduit routing and visibility, commissioners moved to grant the certificate of appropriateness. The approval allows the meter relocation and heat-pump installation as shown on the submitted plans and conditioned on confirmation that visible elements be painted or screened where appropriate.
