Council trims one management-aide position from animal services for FY26

On June 9 the Anne Arundel County Council adopted an amendment reducing personal services for the county’s animal-welfare function by $81,900, removing one management-aid position from the administration’s requested staffing package.
Councilmember Volke said the change removes one of six positions the administration requested for what the sponsor referred to as the Department of Animal Services (also called animal care and control in the discussion). Budget officer Chris Trumbauer confirmed the department had been consulted and could live with the scaled-back staffing this year; the administration did not oppose the amendment.
Councilmembers discussed potential uses for the savings elsewhere in the budget; Trumbauer noted the amount was similar to the cost of a special-education position in the school system and could be redeployed in supplemental budgeting discussions. The amendment passed 7–0.
The administration cautioned that the department might request the position again in a future budget year, but accepted the change for FY26 as part of broader negotiation across the budget.
