Sumter School District staff reported that the Maywood project has an estimated remaining balance of $129,008.86 on an original $383,000 budget and that most major construction items are completed.
“Of this $383,000 project, we've spent year to date $253,000 of it, which leaves a balance of $129,008.86 remaining on this project,” Shatika L. Spearman, chief finance officer, told the committee. She said final items included a cove base (approximately $1,400) that was completed by district maintenance and charged to the general fund, with an internal transfer to the project account to follow.
Trustees expressed concern that visible site conditions at Maywood suggested more work may be needed before reclassifying the remaining balance as surplus. Brian Austin told the committee that, in his view, “if you were to go out there today and look at this track, it looked like nothing was ever done,” and raised questions about security, the placement of the new concession stand relative to the original field house, and whether additional maintenance funds might be required.
Bonnie Disney and other trustees asked whether architects had been involved, who designed the work and whether invoices and inspections were documented; staff said the district paid architects and that those names and records would be made available. Trustees asked administration to coordinate site visits so board members can inspect Maywood before any decision is made about reassigning the surplus.
Spearman said the remaining $129,008.86 will remain in the project account until the administration and board confirm project completion and any additional work required. The committee did not approve any transfer of those funds at this meeting.
