Senators on the Local and Municipal Affairs Committee on Wednesday reported HB 285 favorably after the bill’s author said the village of Edgefield no longer needs a separate police chief position because the sheriff’s office already provides law-enforcement services.
The bill’s author described Edgefield as "a community of 190 people" and said the sheriff already covers the area and will continue to do so if the bill becomes law. On motion of Senator Bass the committee reported HB 285 favorably; no objections were recorded on the transcript.
The measure abolishes the municipal office of police chief in the village named in the bill. The committee did not record public opposition during the hearing. As a local bill, implementation would be coordinated with the municipal government and the parish sheriff if the Legislature enacts the change.
