The City of Tupelo City Council approved adding a 2018 Dodge Charger seized in a narcotics investigation to the city's asset list.
The city's police leadership described the seizure during the meeting. The police chief said the North Mississippi Narcotics Unit "did an investigation on an individual that was selling fentanyl in and around the Tupelo, Mississippi area." The chief explained the office's enforcement approach: "We have really tried to step up our game when it comes to seizing assets because we have found that when you hit them in the pocketbook, as well as send them to jail, it really sends a message." He told council that the individual had been using a 2018 Dodge Charger to sell fentanyl, the department proved that use in court, and the vehicle was seized and is now city property. "And I'm asking you that we be allowed to add it to our asset list," the chief said.
Council approved the request by voice vote. The transcript did not record the defendant's name, the court case number, or whether forfeiture proceeds (if any) will be directed to a specific fund.
The action adds the vehicle to the city's asset inventory for use or disposition under city policy; the minutes did not specify immediate plans for the vehicle's use or sale.
