Commission approves veteran service officer hire conditional on final preemployment paperwork

The St. Clair County Commission voted to hire a veteran service officer, with the hire expressly made conditional on completion of required preemployment documentation.
County Attorney Kyle Baringkind explained that one piece of documentation from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency had not yet been returned and recommended the commission make any hire contingent on satisfactory completion of the remaining paperwork. "My recommendation would be ... that you pass a motion to bring him on still conditional upon the satisfactory completion of the final preemployment documentation," Baringkind said.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to hire the veteran service officer on that condition. The motion passed on a voice vote. Commissioners and staff said the conditional hire would allow the county to restore veteran services while ensuring statutory and county preemployment requirements are met.
County staff said the position would be probationary as with other hires and the county would complete background checks and related onboarding steps before the employee’s status becomes final.
