St. Clair County to pursue Safe Streets for All grants for two intersections

The St. Clair County Commission voted to move forward with applications for federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) funding to improve two local intersections, County Engineer Dan Dahlke told the panel.
Dahlke said the county has identified two candidate projects. "One of them, 33 and 26, would be a roundabout," he said, and the intersection at Kelly Creek Road and Park Avenue would be a signalized intersection. He recommended working with consultant O’Brien to develop an SS4A grant application; commissioners approved that recommendation.
Chairmen and commissioners asked where the SS4A funding fit among other federal funds; Dahlke described SS4A as safety-focused federal money administered at the highway level and separate from other Federal Highway funds. Commissioners also discussed a larger regional project, the Northern Belt Line, and clarified that Appalachian Regional Commission transportation funds mentioned for the belt-line are a separate funding stream and generally administered at the state level.
The commission approved moving ahead with grant development and to hold a conference call with the consultant to refine the project list and application materials.
