The Cannon County Commission voted on June 5 to purchase a 2.25-acre parcel adjacent to the county ball field for $15,000.
Commissioners said the parcel backs up to the river and joins county-owned property across the river near the ball field. The county intends to clean the site and add parking or other park-related access; officials said there is no current plan for major development on the tract.
During discussion, commissioners and other participants said the parcel is likely within a flood zone and that historically the river area was kept cleaner, with dredging and removal of gravel bars helping to limit flooding. A participant referenced the role of Reverend James Hale in past efforts to enable dredging for the water plant.
A motion to consider and approve county purchase of the 2.25-acre parcel carried; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. Roll-call names recorded in the meeting transcript at the vote include Nathan Smith, Karen Hanks, Grace Nicholson, George (surname not recorded), David (surname not recorded), Randy Gannon, Frisco (surname garbled), and Thomas Burnett, each recorded voting yes on the motion.
Officials discussed whether removing gravel bars could reduce local flooding and observed that the area’s flood risk had appeared greater in recent years because the channel had not been kept clear.
The commission did not adopt a development plan at the June 5 meeting; staff will proceed with acquisition and site cleanup plans pending closing and any required environmental or floodplain reviews.
