Cannon County officials outline draft budget that includes proposed 3¢ tax increase; special vote set for June 24

County finance staff presented a draft fiscal 2025–26 budget during the Cannon County Commission meeting on June 5 that includes a proposed 3¢ increase in the general fund tax rate and a proposed 50¢ pay raise for county employees.
A staff member said the budget document presented to commissioners shows the county’s general fund and other revenues “right on track” for this time of year but that cash balances typically decline later in the fiscal cycle. The presentation included an estimated ending fund balance and summary financials for review.
The staff member told commissioners the budget as drafted includes an estimated 6% increase in medical insurance costs for county employees and that the sheriff’s budget includes the removal of one deputy and three correctional officers from staffing; those staffing changes will affect the department’s operating lines unless amended.
The county has not finalized payroll figures for the current period. The staff member said Regina, the payroll staff member referenced at the meeting, should have the payroll completed by the Monday before the June 24 meeting; the commission will wait for those final payroll numbers before filing budget amendments.
Commissioners were told the budget committee voted to forward the draft and that the commission will hold a special called meeting at 6 p.m. on June 24 to consider final approval. No final vote on the full budget was taken at the June 5 meeting.
The presentation also noted contracts for services used by the sheriff’s office. Food service bids produced no offers this year and the county is negotiating a 12-month extension with its current food service contractor, IWC, while staff awaits updated pricing. Staff said the county added $20,000 to the food and medical lines in the draft but flagged that actual costs may exceed the estimate and could require future amendments.
County officials said the property tax change shown in the draft—described to commissioners as a 3¢ increase in the general fund—would increase a $1,000 taxable assessment by an amount the presenter characterized as roughly $16 to $18 in annual tax, as presented to the commission.
The commission scheduled the June 24 special called meeting to permit staff to finalize payroll and prepare any necessary budget amendments before a final vote.
