The design shows retractable bleachers and loose seating to reach a total capacity the presenters described as about 450 people (280 in retractable bleachers, approximately 20 on the floor and about 150 in a balcony).
Accessibility and vertical circulation
Committee members pressed on elevator capacity and placement. Presenters said the current design includes two elevators: one larger elevator sized to accommodate a stretcher and a second, somewhat smaller elevator adjacent to the ramp and stair. Several committee members expressed concern that a single elevator serving parts of the program could create delay for students temporarily unable to use stairs (injuries, mobility needs) and asked staff to study moving or re‑siting an elevator to shorten travel distances. Designers confirmed elevator footprints can be adjusted and said they would evaluate a centrally located elevator option and place a second elevator on a budget contingency/alternates list.
Stormwater, site constraints and utilities
Because the selected downtown site is more constrained than the previously considered site, civil engineering work is under way to design required stormwater detention. The presenters said limited surface area will likely require mostly underground detention systems (rain gardens on site where possible), and they warned that underground detention can add cost and require coordination with parking and potential future solar or geothermal layouts. The civil engineer is designing stormwater retention and will include those requirements in the upcoming cost estimates.
Energy systems and life‑cycle cost analysis
The project team said it is revising the life‑cycle cost analysis to account for natural‑gas condensing boilers with an air‑cooled chiller as one option and ground‑source (geothermal) heat pumps as another. The team stated it has contacted local utilities (Liberty Gas and the electrical provider Unitil) to gather connection and service information. Presenters noted that federal incentives previously available under the Inflation Reduction Act had been a factor in earlier analyses; recent federal legislation developments were described as changing the tax‑credit picture for solar PV though credits for ground‑source heat pumps remained available at the time of discussion. The life‑cycle cost analysis will include operational cost, greenhouse‑gas impact and tax‑credit scenarios and will be returned to the district sustainability committee for review.
Budget and schedule direction
Design completion is targeted for July 17. The committee was told a private construction estimator will need about a month to price the design and the team will present a set of priced alternates (cafetorium vs. separate multipurpose room, one vs. two elevators, turf vs. grass fields) to inform a new budget by September.
