The Othello School District certified the Class of 2025 as meeting district and state graduation requirements at a commencement ceremony at Othello High School, where students received awards, two valedictorians addressed the crowd and district leaders recognized staff transitions.
Principal Kat Atchison, principal of Othello High School, opened the ceremony, and Superintendent Dr. Pete Perez and Assistant Superintendent Jessica Schenck completed the formal certification of graduates. Schenck was introduced as leaving her post to serve as superintendent of the Mount Baker School District.
The ceremony named two valedictorians for the graduating class. "You did it," Natalie Cirillo told classmates after receiving recognition; Cirillo said she plans to attend Washington State University to study biology and criminal justice. Claire Gilbert, the other valedictorian, told graduates, "You don't have to have everything figured out right now," and said she will attend Brigham Young University.
Student speakers from multiple schools also spoke, including Elizabeth De Jesus Flores of Desert Oasis High School, who said "Everyone has a purpose" and described her plans to attend Big Bend Community College before transferring to Washington State University for veterinary studies. Riley Rodriguez, ASB executive council president, gave remarks on behalf of the class and said he plans to attend the University of Washington.
Awards presented at the ceremony included the Citizenship Award to Aaliyah Wilhelm; the Service Award to Riley Rodriguez; the Student Activities Award to Jesse Contreras and Riley Rodriguez; the female Athlete Award to Emmy Pineda; the male Athlete Award to Mason Perez; and the Perseverance Award to Savannah Marie Guevara. Benji Garza was recognized for perfect attendance across K–12, and Parker Freeman was cited for completing an extraordinary amount of science coursework in four years.
The ceremony also included recognition of graduates who have chosen to serve in the U.S. armed forces. Announced enlistees included Kimberly Soriano (Army National Guard), Ingrid Soriano Lopez (Army National Guard), Abel Cruz (Marines) and others who were presented a red, white and blue cord in a tradition supported by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter.
School and district leaders read the names of the graduating students and certified that they had met the "graduation standards, requirements, and the policies as set forth by the Othello School District board of directors, and the state of Washington." Graduates were then invited to move their tassels and exit toward meeting points along the track.
The ceremony included acknowledgments of teachers, families and staff across Othello High School, Desert Oasis High School and SkillSource. The program emphasized student achievement, community support and the transitions ahead for students and some district staff.
Details not specified during the ceremony include the total number of graduates and the exact date of formal issuance of diplomas by the district office.
