Board approves Instructional Policies Committee recommendations: new ESN diploma pathway, AP sophomore English and math sequence pilot

The East Side Union High School District Board of Trustees on June 5 approved recommendations from the Instructional Policies Committee (IPC) to adopt or pilot new courses and instructional materials for the coming year.
IPC — a district advisory group of teachers, site administrators, subject‑area coordinators and labor representatives — recommended a suite of course changes intended to expand access and align curriculum with state standards and local priorities.
Highlights of the IPC recommendations adopted by the board include: - A standards‑aligned diploma pathway for students with extensive support needs (ESN). Subject‑area coordinators in English, math, science and social science have been developing ESN‑appropriate coursework that meets Assembly Bill 181 requirements; English 2 Essentials was permanently adopted and English 3 Essentials piloted. - AP English Seminar at the sophomore level approved for permanent adoption so that eligible sophomores may begin AP‑level work earlier in high school. - Mathematics: pilot of a geometry course in 2025–26 as part of a three‑year transition from integrated math to a traditional sequence (geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II) with corresponding textbook pilots (Savas Envision California geometry and McGraw‑Hill Reveal). IPC will monitor pilot outcomes before recommending a single districtwide adoption. - Career and elective additions: a piloted math lab combining coding and robotics; Mariachi as a performing‑arts elective pilot; Hindi and Vietnamese courses to expand world‑language options and credit toward biliteracy recognition. - Multiple science and CTE course recommendations and instructional‑material adoptions for AP and career technical classes.
Director of Instructional Services Kyle Kletner and English subject‑area coordinator Abby Soriano described the IPC process: teachers and coordinators pilot materials, visit classrooms, solicit student feedback and then recommend materials and courses to the board. Soriano highlighted the ESN pathway work and said the district is among leaders in the state for developing diploma alternatives that remain standards aligned.
Trustees unanimously approved the IPC slate. The board asked staff to monitor pilot implementations and provide follow‑up reports on student access and outcomes.
