Middle school library space to be converted to one formal classroom for special programs

Keystone Central School District administration proposed converting an area of the Central Mountain Middle School library into a formal classroom to provide space for EOL and autistic support services.
Facilities staff said the area now uses bookshelves and open space for instruction, which creates noise and limits effectiveness. The administration originally hoped to create two classrooms in that footprint but, after applying state classroom size regulations, determined only a single classroom can be accommodated.
Superintendent Redmond and staff said completing the enclosed classroom would improve learning conditions for students requiring specialized services. Board member Elizabeth Wade asked whether the conversion would meet the program needs and noted the committee had learned that the space would only accommodate one classroom, not two.
The item was scheduled to return to the board for a formal vote; staff said the converted room will be used for EOL and autistic support programs and that other space needs will be addressed in future facilities planning.
