Trousdale County board members reviewed offers from multiple banks for a certificate of deposit and voted to renew the county’s funds on a short-term basis after discussion about changing interest rates.
The decision matters because board members said they did not want to lock county funds into a long term while market rates remain volatile.
Board members reviewed responses from banks including Wilson Bank and Trust and First National Bank. A board member read the quoted rate responses from Wilson Bank and Trust: “10 months, it was 4.26; 20 months, it was 4.3; 30 months, it was 4.35; and 42 months, it was 4.25.” At a later timestamp the board recorded a follow-up rate for an 11-month term at 4.4%.
During discussion a board member said, “I wouldn't tie anything up much longer than 12 — 11 to 12 months because of the fact that things the rates are changing a lot,” expressing the board’s reluctance to choose a long-term certificate. Another member noted the county’s current CD is with First Avenue and the discussed action would be a renewal.
Board member Misty Harper moved to proceed with the selected short-term option; Bonnie Taylor seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The minutes reflect that the board chose a short-term approach to avoid locking funds while rates fluctuate; the board instructed staff to proceed with the renewal and to monitor market conditions before any longer-term placements.
