County management reported progress on multiple county projects and upcoming training events during the meeting.
Ms. Dukes said work on Vowdell Road began that day, with the intersection realigned, guardrail installed and milling started. She told commissioners, “We are still on track pending the weather to have that project completed prior to the start of school.” Miss Barrow will update the county’s Facebook page with progress and traffic notices; staff clarified in a later exchange that the closure applied to the intersection only, not nearby businesses.
Ms. Dukes said Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is hosting a staff‑level recovery workshop at the Emergency Operations Center from 9 a.m. until noon the following day; she invited commissioners to attend and offered to provide a follow‑up update. She also said county staff will meet with regional counterparts to continue planning for SPLOST 9 and that civic center roof plans “are already on June 8, and that will move to bid.”
On training, Ms. Dukes said there will be NIMS (National Incident Management System) training for elected officials from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center; she noted some commissioners previously completed NIMS training but that updated training is important given federal threshold changes and GEMA/FEMA response differences.
Regarding the animal shelter project, a staff exchange noted the design‑build RFP is about “90% complete” and should be ready to advertise by the end of next week. Commissioners did not take formal action on these reports during the meeting; they were informational updates from county management.
