Lowndes County commissioners approved an application to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Local Road Assistance (LRA) program for $1,677,028.92 in fiscal year 2025 funds to resurface five roads.
Public Works presenter Mr. McLeod said, “The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that the governor and the legislature included the LRA in the amended fiscal year budget 2025. The LRA funds will be distributed using the LMIG application system and will require no matching funds. The fiscal year '20 '20 '5 LRA formula amount for Lowndes County is $1,677,028.92.” He listed the roads proposed for resurfacing as Newsom Road, Radar Site Road, Coffee Road, Henby Lane and Webb Road North.
McLeod clarified scope and mileage: he said three of those roads — Newsom, Radar Site and Henby Lane — “will all 3 be paved in its entirely length,” and that Webb Road North is proposed from Highway 122 to Coffee Road, which covers the worst section within the mileage allocation. When a commissioner asked about distance, McLeod said the affected segment measured about “1.78 miles.” He told the commission the LRA application being approved that night would likely be processed “fairly quickly, probably within the next 2 weeks,” and staff expected to advertise bid packages in August.
A motion to approve the LRA application was made and seconded; the chair called the vote and commissioners approved the motion by voice vote with no opposition recorded in the transcript.
The funds require no local match under the LRA rules as described by staff in the meeting. No final contractor selections were discussed in the meeting; staff said bidding would follow the application approval and funding award.
