The Lowndes County Commission reappointed Jeff Sykes to the Valdosta‑Lowndes County Airport Authority and Joyce Evans to two local boards by acclamation during its meeting.
County staff member Ms. Dukes told commissioners, “The term that is currently held by Mr. Jeff Sykes expired on May the 20 first of this year. Mr. Sykes would like to be reappointed. Also, Doctor. Ben Hogan has expressed desire to serve.” After a call for nominations, the commission closed nominations and reappointed Sykes by acclamation.
Ms. Dukes said Vice Chair Joyce Evans’s term on the Southern Georgia Area Agency on Aging will expire June 30 and that “vice chairperson Evans has expressed a desire to continue to serve.” Commissioners nominated Evans and she was reappointed by acclamation. Ms. Dukes also noted a vacancy on the South Georgia Community Service Board created when the local board chair was appointed to the State Board of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities; Evans was nominated and appointed to that board as well.
The appointments were handled by nomination and acclamation; the commission did not record a roll call vote in the transcript. The meeting included brief questions about eligibility for the Area Agency on Aging seat: one commissioner asked whether the appointee must be 65 or older, and Ms. Dukes responded that Evans “qualifies” and that she had served for several years.
The discussion included an additional, unnamed expression of interest from Dr. Ben Hogan for the airport authority seat; no formal nomination of Dr. Hogan was recorded.
The commission moved on to other agenda items after completing the three appointments.
