The Buncombe County Board of Education approved summer school contracts after a board member asked how summer staff are paid.
Board member Miss Plemons asked whether summer school employees receive their regular teacher pay and local supplements. Tina Thorpe explained the employees are paid “on their base pay for the daily rate of pay for whatever salary schedule they are on from the state of North Carolina.” She added that summer work does not include the local supplement and that state summer academy funds (PRC 230) cover those salaries.
The board then moved and approved the summer school contracts. The district noted the summer salaries are funded primarily by state program funds and follow state salary schedules; local supplements are not provided for that summer work.
