The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on June 5 approved two new job descriptions — Attendance Support Specialist and School Registrar — designed to centralize attendance work at schools and reduce truancy driven by late arrivals and data inconsistencies.
District leaders told the board clerical staff had been stretched across many front‑office duties and that a dedicated attendance role will focus on data quality (JCampus coding), daily outreach to families, and coordination with Child Welfare & Attendance teams. Superintendent Cole said the positions will be trained on state reporting requirements and on the district’s systems so that excused versus unexcused absences and check‑in/out codes are recorded correctly.
Board members asked whether existing staff displaced by realignment could fill these positions; staff said candidates must apply and schools will follow hiring processes; district staffing and salary ranges (UR308 to UR112, described in the meeting as roughly $50,000–$70,000) were discussed. Dr. Powell Lewis and other members emphasized the positions should focus on high‑need campuses and be paired with technology and training to reduce data errors.
The motion to approve the new job descriptions was moved by board member Powell Lewis and seconded by Mr. Lanus; the motion carried.
