Human-resources director Alfonso reported to the committee that the district has made measurable hiring progress as it prepares for the 2025–26 school year.
Alfonso told the board that the job fair produced 181 recommended hires this year, up from 137 the previous year. He said the district currently lists 75 vacancies — a notable improvement from the prior year — and that HR is conducting regular onboarding and certification processing to clear positions. He also said the district’s substitute list stands at about 1,431 individuals and that the HR office is purging inactive names with an option for those individuals to rejoin the list.
Transportation staffing was described as improving: the district’s transportation manager is in round three of a hiring process, Alfonso said, and officials expect drivers to be available to fill routes by the start of school. He added that paraeducator training currently has 56 individuals enrolled and that assistant-principal and principal appointment recommendations will be presented to the board.
Questions from board members sought clarification on administrative-transfer procedures and the district’s approach to onboarding. Alfonso said administrative transfers occur at the superintendent’s discretion and that principals who seek transfers must apply for open administrative positions. He said HR runs a multi-day onboarding process that brings 20–25 certificated staff for orientation on the district 4-day workweek.
Why it matters: Staffing levels and substitute availability are direct operational concerns for the coming school year; the district reported progress but continues active recruitment and onboarding.
What’s next: HR said it will continue hiring and present administrative appointments at the next board meeting.
