Council reconsiders Bishop rezoning; members direct a fresh planning review of Highway 84 corridor

The Cairo City Council voted to reconsider the Bishop rezoning application and directed staff and committees to restart planning for the Highway 84 corridor, council members said.
A councilmember moved to reconsider the rezoning application. During discussion other members urged a comprehensive update to the city60s plan for the area, including stricter setbacks and zoning requirements. "What we need to do is start over with this, start over that whole side of Highway 84, get the planning and zoning committee, get the Southwest Georgia regional committee, come in and look at that area for the future, set some strict zoning requirements, setbacks, and all that," a councilmember said.
The motion to reconsider passed. Members said the process should include outreach to homeowners, developers, the planning commission and regional planners and suggested the review could extend from the First Baptist Church area down to EMC and adjacent neighborhoods.
The council did not adopt new zoning at the meeting; instead members directed the planning process to be restarted and signaled intent to return with updated recommendations for the area.
