Teachers describe Little Rams preschool enrollment, curriculum and transition plans

Preschool staff at Fremont County School District #2 presented a year-end summary of the Little Rams (pre-K) program, including enrollment, curriculum, community partnerships and transition activities.

Nicole Brown, a pre-K teacher at the Little Grama Building Center, said the pre-K 3 classroom began the year with 11 students and ended with nine; as of the May registration window she reported nine students enrolled for next year with more expected before August. Brown and her paraprofessional Jessica Fox distributed a packet containing the pre-K standards, daily schedules, a sample monthly newsletter and the final assessment used for students’ end-of-year evaluations.

Teachers described a mixed schedule of morning whole-group instruction and afternoon STEM and independent activities. Staff said three students currently attend full day (parents pay $100 per month for afternoons) and that the grandparent program provides morning support; Brown noted the program relies on community volunteers and that organizers are seeking an afternoon grandparent helper.

The staff outlined transition activities for students moving to kindergarten: kindergarten roundup scheduled for a Thursday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., bus visits to the K–12 school on May 29 from 10 a.m. to 11:25 a.m., and Individualized Education Program meetings coordinated with kindergarten staff for students with special needs. Teachers said they use FastBridge and other assessments (twice-yearly progress reports) to group students and monitor kindergarten readiness.

Board members thanked preschool staff for their work; district staff said they will continue to support the program and review enrollment and staffing before finalizing next year’s schedules.
