The Metro Nashville Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception on June 5 allowing Charles and Renee Anwu to operate a large home daycare at 4612 Indian Summer Drive in the R-20 residential district.
Applicant Renee Anwu described 40 years’ experience in early childhood education and said she has passed inspections by the fire marshal and environmental-health authorities and is awaiting the permit to operate. Joey Hargis, metro zoning administrator, reviewed the site plan showing use of a fenced rear play area and indoor space for care.
Council member Jennifer Gamboa (District 3) spoke in support, noting local childcare shortages and citing a 2022 mayor’s office survey of more than 2,500 residents that placed access to affordable, quality childcare among top community priorities. Gamboa said neighborhood outreach had taken place and that the applicant had held an open house for neighbors.
Hargis told the board the applicant met the zoning standards for a large daycare-home special exception, including lot-size and setbacks; he confirmed that the applicant had arranged a fenced exterior play area and that licensing requirements would be administered by the state. The board moved to approve the special exception; after a motion and second the board voted to approve.
Hargis and the applicant were advised to complete any remaining permit paperwork with the Codes Department and licensing authorities before operations begin.
