Robert Gomez, director of facilities, said roofing work is underway at four locations; Cavazos and Canterbury are out for bid with openings on June 10, and two other sites designed by a second architect are expected to go out for bid June 11. He said the combined budget for the four roofing projects is $3,000,000.
On multi‑use buildings for the district’s four high schools, Gomez said identical metal‑panel designs are out for bid with an anticipated June 12 bid opening. The program budget is $2,000,000 total, or $500,000 per high school, and the district plans to award all four to one vendor to secure better pricing. Gomez said the metal buildings will be insulated and air‑conditioned and that exterior colors will match each school.
Career and athletics projects: the district received bids on a CTE project and negotiated a price down from $8.3 million to about $7.6 million; the total program budget is $10.3 million and administration planned to present a recommendation at the June 9 board meeting. The Edinburgh North High School bleachers project is scheduled to begin demolition June 26; new bleachers are due to arrive Aug. 4 and installation is expected to finish by Aug. 15. Gomez said the bleachers budget was $200,000 and the district awarded the job at $192,000.
Economides High School’s bus drive contractor has mobilized and is scheduled to complete by July 18; the low bid came in at $61,631 against a $200,000 budget, and staff proposed using the budget surplus to add concrete and consider canopies for the bus drop‑off.
Fixed‑assets restroom and bus‑transportation concerns: Gomez updated the committee on a planned restroom renovation to meet accessibility requirements; maintenance will abate asbestos and reconfigure fixtures. The project budget is $25,000 though initial estimates suggested it may approach $30,000. Board member Letty Garcia raised concerns about the bus‑transportation maintenance area restrooms and staff break rooms, calling conditions longstanding and requesting photographs and a formal assessment; Gomez said staff would assess the site and start planning.
Donations and community partners: Gilbert and Tria of SLR Builders offered to donate four steel canopies for high schools; SLR will provide and install the steel structures and roofing while the district provides concrete slabs. Gomez said the district will prepare a board agenda item for acceptance of the donation and will coordinate permitting and installation with maintenance and D'Entirea (maintenance lead).
Procurement notes: Gomez told the committee that some bid openings initially returned only one submission and that the district extended bid periods to solicit more participation; the district said it followed procurement procedures and reported sealed submissions remained sealed until opening. Staff will return to the board as needed with award recommendations and agenda items for accepted donations.
