Board debates language on student goals, presses for accountability and clearer career pathways

At the retreat, board members pushed to sharpen the districtstrategic goals to emphasize student accountability and clearer postgraduation planning.

Several members critiqued the goal wording “safe, known and valued” as too vague and urged replacing or augmenting it with language that emphasizes accountability and high expectations. One board member suggested changing the phrase to “safe, accountable and valued,” and others proposed inserting “excellence” or phrases such as “striving for excellence through high expectations and individualized support.” Board members said clearer wording helps focus objectives and signals priorities to staff and the community.

Discussion also focused on practical objectives to improve student outcomes: stronger systems for student behavior and accountability, expanded professional development for staff on behavior management, clearer counselor-facilitated high-school-and-beyond plans and development of individualized pathways so each high-school student reviews a postgraduation plan annually with counselors and families. A board member described wanting every senior to have a multi-year pathway showing the steps toward their postgraduation goal (college, vocational training, workforce, etc.).

The board directed staff to incorporate these concepts into the draft objectives for 2025–26: add explicit objectives on student accountability strategies, professional supports for classroom management, and a proposal for counselor-led pathway reviews. Staff will return with proposed objective language and implementation steps over the summer for the board to refine before September approval.
