Alpharetta planning commission approves conditional use for Chung's Taekwondo Academy

The Alpharetta Planning Commission on June 5 approved a conditional use permit for Chung's Taekwondo Academy to operate a martial arts school in a 2,200-square-foot suite at 480 North Main Street, Suite 216, with limits on hours, signage and occupation.
Staff found the academy would be compatible with adjacent commercial and office uses in the Main Street Walk development and recommended approval subject to five conditions, including a cap on floor area, restriction of the approval to the named business, limits on use to martial arts and after-school programs, hours of operation and compliance with the city sign code.
Michael (planning staff) told the commission the request would not adversely affect nearby properties and that similar uses, such as a dance studio, had been approved in Main Street Walk previously. Michael summarized staff’s five recommended conditions: limit the approved school commercial use to 2,200 square feet; tie the conditional use to Chung's Taekwondo Academy (no subleasing); restrict activities to a martial arts studio and after‑school program; limit hours to Monday–Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and require signage be submitted to the Design Review Board and comply with the city sign code.
Applicant Oyuang Chung, presenting himself as a grand master and the academy’s operator, said he has taught Taekwondo for nearly 50 years and plans to relocate his business from its existing location on Highway 9 in Milton to the downtown Alpharetta site. Chung said typical class sizes would be about 10–15 students and that he expects two employees at the new location. “I'm a grand master of Taekwondo. I'm teaching Taekwondo almost 50 years,” Chung told the commission.
A commissioner moved to approve CU-25-09 with the staff conditions; another commissioner seconded. The chair recorded the motion as carried. The chairman said the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council in June.
The conditional use approval limits the space to Chung's Taekwondo Academy and restricts activities and hours as a way to address neighborhood compatibility and parking concerns noted in staff review. The agenda included no public opposition recorded in the citizen participation report or at the May 14 community meeting.
