Gardner City is building a new salt shed at the Department of Public Works headquarters on 50 Mancur Drive, the mayor said, to increase winter salt storage capacity by approximately four times. Construction is underway after the city completed tree clearing, foundation work and filed required permits with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency because of wetland proximity.
Why this matters: Larger bulk salt capacity reduces the risk the city will run short in high-demand winters, allows bulk purchasing savings and supports faster road treatment during storms, the mayor said.
The mayor said the city pursued in-house work where possible to control costs: DPW crews are preparing the foundation before the building construction begins. The new shed will increase on-hand salt inventory and enable better winter readiness. Residents were directed to contact the Gardner DPW for further information about the project site.
