Williamsport updates fire code, announces promotions and small HVAC purchase for training room

Williamsport City Council voted 4-0 on first reading to amend Part 15 of the city code — the fire prevention code — replacing the 2015 edition of the International Fire Code with the 2018 edition.
At the same meeting Chief Unks presented a series of promotions within the Williamsport Bureau of Fire and announced two new hires. The chief listed promotions including the recent appointment of an assistant chief of training, promotions to platoon chief and lieutenant, and the hiring of two new firefighters; he provided educational and service histories for each individual as part of the presentation.
Council also approved a resolution authorizing an agreement between the Williamsport Bureau of Fire and Steam Specialties HVAC to purchase and install a mini-split unit for a newly converted training room. Staff said the unit purchase would not exceed $6,875 and that the work was supported by grants that helped convert a former stockroom into the training space. The chief said the mini-split will provide heating and air conditioning for the room and that the purchase had been reviewed by the Public Safety Committee and administrative staff.
Council members asked about equipment lifetimes and warranties; the chief said older mini-splits installed in the 1980s had lasted more than 20 years and that warranty paperwork would be included in procurement records. The resolution authorizing the HVAC agreement passed 4-0.
The fire-code ordinance and the personnel promotions were presented during the meeting and progressed as described; the code change was taken up on first reading and the HVAC purchase was authorized as a contract resolution.
