Committee recommends confirmation of three nominees to Seattle Arts Commission

The Sustainability, City Light and Arts & Culture Committee recommended confirmation of three nominees to the Seattle Arts Commission on June 6, sending the committee recommendation to the full City Council for its June 17 meeting.

The nominations are: Ed King (executive director, Pottery Northwest), Kate Nagel Caraluzzo (executive director, Town Hall Seattle) and Vanessa Villanovos (seeking reappointment). The committee voted 4-0 to recommend confirmation.

The Seattle Arts Commission is a 16-member advisory body that consults with the Office of Arts & Culture on policy, grant and public-art selections, and programming. Kelly Davidson, deputy director for the Seattle Arts Commission, briefed the committee and described the three nominees and the commission’s committee structure, including facilities and equitable development, cultural investments, and public art advisory committees.

Ed King introduced himself as executive director of Pottery Northwest and said he wants to “underscore that word everyone” when discussing access to the arts; he also said, “clay is for everyone.” Kate Nagel Caraluzzo described Town Hall Seattle as “the intersection of arts and culture and also civic engagement” and said her recent Leadership Tomorrow experience helped her learn to “sit with discomfort and navigate uncomfortable conversation” — skills she said she would bring to the commission. The reappointment candidate, Vanessa Villanovos, was described by staff as an experienced choreographer, educator and founder of Balerico Dance, and as a current member of the commission’s facilities and equitable development committee who previously served as co-chair.

The clerk read the three appointment items into the record as Appointment 03168 (Ed King), Appointment 03169 (Kate Nagel Caraluzzo) and Appointment 03170 (Vanessa Villanovos). The committee’s roll-call vote on each recommendation recorded Council member Saka, Council member Strauss, Council member Solomon and Chair Alexis Mercedes Rank voting in favor; each recommendation passed 4-0 and will be forwarded to the June 17 City Council meeting for final action.

No members of the public were registered to speak during the hybrid public-comment period for this meeting.

The committee discussion highlighted the nominees’ focus on inclusion, community connection and increasing public participation in arts venues across Seattle. Committee members also named upcoming Town Hall events during the briefing and thanked the nominees for their volunteer service.
