Montgomery Fire Chief Mifford Jordan to retire Aug. 1 after 40 years

Fire Chief Mifford Jordan announced his retirement effective Aug. 1, closing a 40-year career that included nearly 19 years as Montgomery Fire Rescue’s chief and department accreditations and improvements.
Jordan, the department’s 13th fire chief, told attendees at the Class 2024 C graduation that he joined Montgomery Fire Rescue on July 16, 1985, and became chief on Dec. 22, 2006. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to be here today,” he said, noting the department’s ISO Class 1 rating and CFAI and CAAS accreditations earned under his leadership.
The announcement came during the graduation ceremony for 17 recruits who completed a 28-week academy. Jordan said the department had received “40 plus million dollars in all every shape and fashion” in recent years to support salary increases, equipment and training. Mayor Steven L. Reed amplified that praise, saying the city invested in new apparatus and pay increases during Jordan’s tenure: “We saw 7 new trucks, 5 pumpers … and the 32% salary increases all came at the advocacy of Chief Jordan,” Reed said.
Mayor Reed, who attended the ceremony, asked the audience to give Jordan a standing ovation and credited Jordan’s persistent advocacy for securing resources. “When you have someone like Chief Jordan who’s running the operation the way he has, you don’t need a helicopter mayor,” Reed said, adding the investments have been “money well invested.”
Others at the ceremony echoed thanks for Jordan’s leadership and the department’s partnership with the city’s public safety agencies. Capt. Keldrick R. Williams thanked Jordan for his mentorship during remarks to the graduating class.
