The Powhatan County Board of Supervisors on May 19, 2025 approved the county’s secondary-system construction budget priority list for fiscal year 2026 and the six‑year plan for 2026–2031, including trench widening and paving on Route 711.
Staff said the county will apply state secondary-road funds through VDOT toward trench widening on two segments of Route 711 (sections 4 and 5), totaling about 2.25 miles. The project will widen the shoulder recovery area within the existing right-of-way and then VDOT will overlay the road so it matches adjacent pavement, staff said. The work is aimed at reducing crashes and improving nighttime drivability while preserving the road’s scenic-byway character.
Board members discussed crash-history and traffic volumes when considering the recommendation. A public hearing on the plan drew no speakers at the meeting, and supervisors approved Resolution R‑2025‑30 directing staff to submit the county’s priority list to VDOT.
Staff said the work will be coordinated with VDOT and scheduled through the standard secondary-road programming process.
