Board approves supplemental appropriations for forestry, tourism, animal shelter and school transfer

The Page County Board of Supervisors approved a package of supplemental appropriations and a school budget transfer affecting several departments.
What was approved: county staff presented two sets of budget items. The first set included three grant and revenue items requested for appropriation: a $10,000 state grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry for spongy moth suppression; $9,950 from animal shelter donation revenue to buy equipment and pay half the cost of a shared storage building; and $83,644 of restricted transient occupancy tax (TOT) plus a $10,000 Virginia Tourism Corporation DMO marketing grant to support printing of tourism materials and a Page Valley Quest booklet. Staff recommended and the board approved appropriating these amounts; officials said the tourism council had unanimously recommended the marketing requests.
Separately, the school division requested and the board approved a transfer of $225,000 from the transportation category to operations and maintenance. County staff described the transfer as covering maintenance expenses including roof repairs, retaining wall work, chairlift replacements and doors; the school reported savings in transportation fuel and other costs that made the transfer available.
Finance staff summarized the total movement: the requested appropriations draw $9,950 from the general fund balance, $83,644 from restricted TOT and $20,000 from state grants; the school transfer shifts $225,000 within the school operating fund without changing the overall school operating appropriation.
Board action: a supervisor moved to approve appropriations and transfers as presented, and the motion carried on the board floor.
