Scott said that practice is largely outdated: "utility companies are no longer that friendly with one another," and some providers now require specific, separate locations for their facilities. He told the council the draft standard mirrors placement rules used in nearby jurisdictions and that the city notified local utilities; Scott said the utility providers contacted "were satisfied that this provides their utility with the protection they need."
A council member moved to approve Ordinance 14-35 — amending Chapter 6 of Title 8 of the Code of Ordinances to change utility placement figure 1.01 for local streets with a 50-foot right-of-way, to repeal conflicting ordinances and to waive the second reading. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
The ordinance text will amend the city's roadway improvement and standard design details to reflect the updated placement standard for utilities; city staff said the change is intended to reduce construction conflicts and align Conyers with neighboring jurisdictions.
