CRCSD outlines summer programs: preschool expansion, free meals, permits and tech guidance

Cedar Rapids Community School District used its year-end Future Ready Today podcast to outline summer services and registration steps, including a new half-day preschool for 3-year-olds, district meal service, permit deadlines and tech reminders for departing seniors and staff.
The podcast said the district is launching a half-day preschool program for 3-year-olds for the 2025–26 school year. "It's available at Cedar River Academy at Taylor and Grant Wood Elementary, Monday through Thursday, with both morning and afternoon sessions, and it's all made possible through the shared visions income based grant," the podcast said. The hosts noted spots are limited and urged families who may qualify to apply early.
The district also reminded families that in-district attendance permit applications are due by June 15, 2025; the podcast cautioned that permit decisions "might not be finalized until after July 31" and advised questions be directed to the Office of School Supports. The hosts said transportation is not provided for students attending via permit.
For technology, the district advised seniors and staff who are leaving to back up CRCSD Google accounts before those accounts are deactivated and offered the CRCSD help desk phone number, (319) 558-2900, for assistance.
On meals, the podcast said CRCSD will serve free meals to all children 18 and under from June 9 to Aug. 22; breakfast runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. "Thanks to grant funding, adults can eat free too at Johnson Elementary and Roosevelt Middle School — one meal per adult just to be present to receive it," the podcast said. The hosts added that meals must be eaten on site this year and that no takeout will be provided. The podcast directed listeners to CRCSD’s website for a full list of meal locations and additional details.
The hosts also promoted summer reading incentives available through local partners — including Barnes & Noble, Pizza Hut, Panda Express, Scholastic, Half Price Books, the Cedar Rapids Public Library and the Colonels — and encouraged families to sign up for programs that reward reading.
