The Gainesville Mayor and Council on May 20 voted unanimously to approve four resolutions that city staff said will provide land for a school athletic project, expand space for the city’s transit fleet, and bring state and federal grant money to city road and airport work.
City Manager Bridal Lackey summarized the four items for council: VR2025-16 to convey just over an acre on Lee Waltrip Drive to the Gainesville City School District for baseball facilities at Lanier Point; BR2025-17 to acquire property behind Main Street for $1,100,000 to expand space for the city’s WEGO/trolley fleet; GR2025-01, a FY25 Local Road Assessment (LRA) grant of about $587,000; and GR2025-02, a GDOT-backed airport project that brings roughly $2,300,000 in federal funds for terminal apron rehabilitation and taxiway lighting replacement, with a 25% local match requirement.
Why it matters: the approvals free up land and funds officials said are needed now to support school athletic facilities, manage an expanding municipal transit fleet, and complete prioritized road and airport maintenance work.
Lackey framed the actions as opportunistic wins for the city. “Our staff was sitting on ready for that phone call to come in,” City Manager Bridal Lackey said, praising the Public Works and administrative teams who moved quickly to secure grant dollars and property deals.
Details from the approved items: - VR2025-16 (conveyance): The city will transfer slightly more than one acre near Lanier Point Park to the Gainesville City Board of Education for development of facilities tied to the high school baseball program, including indoor locker rooms and hitting cages, according to Lackey. - BR2025-17 (property acquisition): The city will acquire a parcel owned by 673 Bradford Street LLC for $1,100,000 using federal funds; city staff said the purchase responds to space constraints created by additions to the WEGO/trolley fleet. - GR2025-01 (LRA grant): The city will accept approximately $587,000 through the state Local Road Assessment program initiated by Governor Kemp to supplement locally prioritized street work. - GR2025-02 (airport apron): The city will accept about $2.3 million in federal funding to rehabilitate the terminal-area apron and replace taxiway lighting; the grant requires a 25% local match.
Council moved and seconded a single motion to approve all four resolutions. The motion passed unanimously.
City staff said that procurement and project planning will follow the approvals; no additional council votes on these specific items were scheduled at the May 20 meeting.
Background: Lackey said several state and federal agencies returned funds to the city after other jurisdictions could not move the money in time, and that Gainesville’s staff was prepared to spend the funds and therefore qualified to receive them.
The city manager also tied the approvals to recent Public Works work and recognition at the meeting, saying staff readiness made the awards possible.
