The Walton County Planning Commission voted to recommend a land-use change and rezone of 3 acres at 720 Jean Veil Road to permit a dog training facility with customer contact, and it approved a setback variance requested by the applicant. The recommendation will be forwarded to the Walton County Board of Commissioners for final action.
The request, presented by Brianne Farr on behalf of property owner Beth Farr, sought a land-use change from Employment Center to Neighborhood Residential and a rezone from A-1 to A-4 to allow on-site dog training with customers. Brianne Farr described typical activity levels and hours, saying clients generally attend one-on-one private lessons or small group classes, and that “they bring them to train, and they receive instruction from us, and then they go home.” Farr said busy days might include two to three group classes with two to four students each; overall class sizes and client visits were described as small and distributed throughout the week.
Commissioners asked about hours and fencing. Farr said client hours could run from about 9 a.m. to as late as 7:30 p.m., though most activity is smaller and spread out; she also confirmed the property is fully fenced and contains additional internal fencing to divide training areas. One commissioner noted the property’s location at the corner of Vasco Adcock and Gene Bell Road and asked staff to confirm local conditions; staff and the commission did not report opposition at the hearing.
A commissioner moved to approve the land-use change, rezone and waiver of the setback variance as requested; a second was recorded, and the motion carried by voice vote. The chair said the case will advance to the Board of Commissioners next month for final consideration.
The commission’s decision is a recommendation; the Board of Commissioners will review the planning commission’s record and may impose conditions or remand the case. The applicant will present the recommendation and any additional materials at the Board hearing.
