Police propose temporary 15 mph zone and adjusted parking plan to ease Nucleus market congestion

Columbia Falls police presented a mitigation plan to address congestion and pedestrian safety tied to a community market held on Nucleus Street.
The chief said staff reviewed the parking signs, adjusted enforcement during early markets, and identified additional parking capacity adjacent to the market while prohibiting parking where bushes block sightlines. As a pedestrian-safety mitigation, the department proposed temporary signs reducing the speed limit to 15 mph for market times and the use of two handheld lidar speed-measuring devices to support enforcement.
The chief and city manager said the city and market organizers have coordinated on shuttles from the junior-high parking lot during at least one market and that the market has been receptive to working with the city. The plan also calls for trimming tall grass to reduce fire and sightline hazards. Council members and staff emphasized better communication with market organizers and more visible public parking guidance for attendees.
