New Horizons High School celebrates Class of 2025, highlights "Mission Possible" and RISE values

New Horizons High School held its commencement ceremony for the Class of 2025 on the evening highlighted by speeches emphasizing resilience and the school’s theme, “mission possible.” Principal Becky Hitchman opened the ceremony and introduced the school’s RISE values; Superintendent Michelle Whitney formally certified that graduates met district and state requirements.

The ceremony’s theme and emphasis were delivered by Principal Becky Hitchman, who said, “this year, as a school, we embrace the theme of mission possible.” Hitchman described the school’s RISE values as “respect, integrity, safety, and excellence, or like we call it, RISE,” and praised students for persistence through challenges including parenting, homelessness and academic setbacks.

Student speakers framed the night around personal stories of struggle and perseverance. Student speaker Viridiana Gallegos Najera told attendees, “I wasn't sure if I would even make it here today,” and described becoming a mother while still in school and working to overcome postpartum depression and other obstacles. Valedictorian David Novella urged classmates that “nothing is impossible,” crediting family and teachers for support that helped him succeed.

Superintendent Michelle Whitney addressed the audience near the ceremony’s close, saying, “Members of the Pasco School District Board of Directors, the students standing before you have met all the graduation requirements, standards, and policies as set forth by the Pasco School District Board of Directors and the state of Washington.” Whitney then presented the graduates for the official conferral of diplomas.

Mrs. Brewster, introduced as a CTE teacher and senior advisor, gave a staff address encouraging graduates to treat challenges as opportunities and to rely on community supports. She highlighted graduates who are teen parents, those who returned after interruptions in their education, and students who balanced work or family obligations while finishing school.

The ceremony included recognition of board leadership and district staff. Principal Hitchman asked the audience to acknowledge board members present, including Board President Amanda Brown and Vice President Dr. Steve Norberg, and named other board members in attendance. The program concluded with the traditional tassel turn and the presentation of the New Horizons High School Class of 2025.

The ceremony primarily served a celebratory and ceremonial role; no policy changes, votes, or administrative actions were taken during the event.
