South Avenue Park work progressing; city says courts, lighting and restroom installation expected by early July

City staff gave a progress update on South Avenue Park, saying site work is underway and that the city expects major elements to be complete by early July.
City administrator Chris White said excavation and new retaining walls should be finished by the end of next week. The project will replace tennis- and basketball-court surfaces, recoat and repair fence poles with new wire mesh, install new basketball-court lighting, and set the base for a prefabricated restroom facility. Staff said the restroom installation is the component most likely to lag but would not prevent park use when courts open.
White told council that Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson secured $150,000 in funding toward the project. The city aims to have court playable by July 4 and will set a timetable for restroom completion later this summer. White also announced the annual hydrant-flushing program will begin in June and that flushing will proceed in four weekly quadrants through the month.
Councilmembers thanked staff and volunteers for park investments and noted some parts of the park may be temporarily inaccessible during construction.
