Olean council approves $10,000 transfer to train two new police hires

The Olean Common Council approved a $10,000 transfer May 13 to pay academy tuition for two newly hired police officers.
The transfer moves funds from line item 3120.100 to 3120.462 to cover $5,000 per recruit, the mayor told the council, and the hires signed five-year commitments to the city. Council members said bringing recruits into the academy early helps the department maintain staffing as retirements or resignations occur.
The council approved Resolution 62-25 on a 6-0 roll call. Council members noted the department pays recruits a reduced rate while they are attending the academy and said staff are identifying funding to cover other personnel adjustments related to upcoming retirements.
A retirement announcement from Sergeant Jason Lasnick, effective June 27 after 24 years of service, was also read at the meeting; council members wished him well and said the department is working to fill vacancies.
