The City of West Miami Recreation Advisory Board discussed proposed social‑media and recording rules for the new gym and directed staff to draft a formal policy that protects privacy while allowing benign personal use.
Jenny, a staff member, said the department will draft policies that require people to ask permission before recording others and that prohibit photography or recording in locker rooms, restrooms and other private areas. "Because we're — we might have kids coming around and we're a government agency, there, I would say to stick with that," Jenny said, adding that management could restrict professional production equipment and large tripods without prior authorization.
Board members raised issues including users filming workouts, bystanders accidentally captured in video and use of personal speakers. The board agreed on common-sense guidelines: personal selfies are acceptable if they don't include other people; no photography or recording of children by unrelated parties; no promotional or commercial filming without management permission; and no radios or personal speakers that disturb others.
The board asked staff to include these rules in the facility's policies and procedures and to provide an enforceable authority line in writing for staff to address violations. No formal vote was taken; staff will draft the policy for a future meeting and include guidance on signage and enforcement.
