The Miami Lakes Veterans Committee approved reallocating $3,500 from the scholarship fund to cover immediate planning costs for a Veterans Monument, the committee said at its meeting.
Committee members said planners Jeremy and Ed Peterman informed the committee they needed the $3,500 to move forward with design and site plans. The committee moved the $3,500 out of the scholarship line and recorded that the amount will be used for monument planning.
Separately, the committee voted to limit individual scholarship awards to a maximum of $2,500 per recipient. Members discussed that awarding a single $2,500 scholarship in a year would allow remaining funds to roll toward monument work or other veteran needs. The committee tasked a subcommittee to finalize scholarship language, eligibility criteria and whether reapplications would be permitted.
The committee also approved a split of proceeds for the upcoming Reindeer Run: 75% to Veterans Park (monument/park projects) and 25% to the American Legion, after the $2,500 scholarship allocation is removed from proceeds.
Committee members said the scholarship application period runs through January and that a subcommittee will review any applications after the cutoff.
