During the public comment portion of the Bear Valley Unified School District Board meeting, a resident addressed the board with broad criticism of district curriculum and diversity-related efforts.
The resident, identified at the meeting as Daniel Gulbranson (comment card noted), told the board, “It seems like, you're not educating. You're indoctrinating.” He urged the board to prioritize traditional academic subjects, saying, “Teach history, math. None of this baloney that all the school district seem to wanna do.” The commenter also raised concerns about retaliation against parents who speak to the board and referenced national political topics and funding priorities in California.
At the start of public comment the board president read the public comment guidelines, explained that each speaker is allotted three minutes and noted that under the Brown Act the board cannot take action on items not on the agenda. The president also referenced the legal citation read into the record (transcript reference to sections 35145 and 72121). The board did not engage in a back-and-forth with the commenter, consistent with the stated public comment procedures.
No formal board action resulted from the comment period.
