Yukon renews interlocal jail agreements; clarifies county jail as emergency backup

The Yukon City Council renewed interlocal agreements that let nearby jurisdictions use the Yukon jail and kept an existing agreement with Canadian County as an emergency backup for short-term housing of municipal prisoners.
Under the agenda, the council approved renewals with the city of Bethany and the Village (name in docket) at a rate of $42 per day per prisoner for the term July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. The agreement with Canadian County was renewed at $57 per day per prisoner for the same term.
Councilmember Jeff Wooten and others approved moving the consent item into the regular agenda for discussion. A question from a member of the public—"If we're contracting with Bethany and Village to bring their prisoners to us, why are we contracting to go to Canadian County?"—prompted staff clarification. City staff explained the interlocal agreement with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office exists so Yukon can temporarily house municipal prisoners in the county jail if Yukon’s facility experiences a problem or is unavailable; Yukon municipal prisoners retain priority in Yukon’s facility.
Ending: The council approved the renewals and recorded that the county agreement is contingency housing only; Yukon will continue to accept outside prisoners under separate reciprocal agreements that were renewed.
