Public Works reports event prep, stormwater grant bid and proposes AED for Big Rock Park

Duval — Public Works Director Steve Lanierzewski updated council on event preparation, parks work, stormwater repairs and a proposed automated external defibrillator (AED) for Big Rock Park during the June 3 meeting.

Lanierzewski said staff are managing remediation and repair after a water leak closed the depot restroom and are coordinating traffic control with WSDOT for the upcoming Duval Days event. He reported progress at Judd Park: pole foundations for a shelter have been installed and site materials are expected in about three weeks.

On capital projects, staff applied this week to the King County Flood Reduction program for a Miller Street drainage/storm repair project with a preliminary cost estimate of $426,000 and a grant ask of $250,000; the city’s storm fund would cover remaining costs if the grant is awarded, staff said.

Lanierzewski presented estimates for installing an AED at Big Rock Park and outlined ongoing maintenance tasks (monthly inspections, battery and pad replacements) plus options to secure the device (alarmed case, cameras, additional lighting). Councilmembers raised potential partner funding (a foundation referenced by Councilmember Napplin) and expressed general support for moving forward at the price point presented; one councilmember said anything under $5,000 would be reasonable and encouraged staff to seek partnerships to offset cost.

Staff asked whether council wished to direct administration to pursue procurement and potential partnerships; council indicated support and asked staff to explore options and return with a plan.
