Council approves limited sign code update to permit park signage and streamline permits

Duval — The City Council approved a limited update to Duval’s sign code on June 3 to allow city signage in parks and open-space zones and to simplify permitting for city facilities and temporary event signs.
Senior planner Troy Davis told council the update was prompted by the need to install park signs in newly developed city parks and to create a consistent look for signage across the park system. The proposed code changes add parks/open-space as a zone that allows city signage, remove an obsolete Riverview zoning district listing, and include technical cleanups and permit-processing clarifications. The planning commission recommended approval at its May 28 meeting.
Staff reported the city issued a Determination of Non-Significance (DNS) under the state environmental review process and received no substantive comments from the Department of Commerce. The changes also anticipate future design standards to be developed by Public Works so park signs will be consistent across sites.
Council moved and seconded the ordinance; the motion passed. Staff will implement the revised code and proceed with park signage design and permitting under the new rules.
