The Metropolitan Council adopted a resolution recognizing June 2025 as Immigrant Heritage Month and heard an extended public-comment segment in which multiple speakers criticized recent immigration enforcement activity and urged the council to stand with immigrant residents.
Councilmember Terry Voe introduced and led support for the resolution; the council adopted the measure during the meeting. Several public commenters from District 28 and immigrant-rights organizations described the May immigration enforcement actions that they said caused fear, family separations and business impacts in neighborhoods. Speakers included community organizers, lawyers and immigrant-rights staff who urged elected officials to protect immigrants’ safety and civil rights.
Speakers asked council members to distribute know-your-rights materials, support municipal legal assistance for immigrants, and resist cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration agents. One coalition representative requested a municipal immigration and civil-rights attorney position to advise the city and represent residents in emergent enforcement situations.
The adoption of the Immigrant Heritage Month resolution was procedural; it recognizes the contributions of immigrant communities and was paired with public appeals for additional municipal actions. Council members who spoke in favor framed the proclamation as recognition of immigrant contributions and as a call to defend vulnerable neighbors during a period of heightened enforcement activity.
