District proposes minor changes to certified staff evaluation: extended observation minimum reduced to 30 minutes

The MSD Southwest Allen County Schools board heard a report on the district’s certified staff evaluation and development plan and a recommendation to reduce the minimum length for extended observations.
Dr. St. John told trustees the plan, retooled about a year earlier after more than a decade without major changes, includes four rubrics for employee groups and a set number of observations. Under the current plan certified staff receive a minimum of six observations across the school year, four of which are short (minimum 10 minutes) and two extended (previously minimum 40 minutes). St. John said the district recommends changing the extended observation minimum from 40 minutes to 30 minutes; administrators may still observe for longer when appropriate.
The proposal also adds prorating language so that the number of required observations for an annual evaluation is proportional if a teacher takes a leave of absence or hosts a student teacher. St. John described the adjustments as responsive to administrator and teacher feedback and aimed at increasing meaningful classroom presence without imposing unnecessary minimums.
